Tobacco Genetic Stocks developed:
- Identified three high solanesol yielding tobacco recombinant Inbred Lines (RILs) viz., 1/135, 1/167 and 1/34 from a mapping population developed between a high solanesol yielding line, HDBRG and low solanesol line, By-53.
- Identified orobanche resistant sp: N. benthamiana- repanda and N. nesophila as O. cernua tolerant species and N. umbratica-nesophila with a smaller number of Orobanche spikes, higher plant height and dry weights under both control and treated conditions as a resistant species.
- Drought tolerant tobacco lines were evaluated and MRS3x SIRI # 32 derived from a cross between MRS-3 (drought tolerant line) and Siri (high yielding popular cultivar was identified as drought tolerant line.
Evaluation of tobacco genotypes for seed and leaf yield:
- F6-2-2 a line for high seed oil was identified with higher seed yield 1600 kg/ha) and cured leaf yield (3322 kg/ha).
Characterization of base and core collections:
- Tobacco core collection was formed from 2100 germplasm by phenotyping the genotypes for 29 morphological traits.
Evaluation of Barbadense germplasm:
- ICB 262, ICB 174, ICB 73, ICB 255, ICB 220, ICB 28, ICB 177, CCB 141 and CCB11A were identified as early maturing barbadense genotypes. ICB 124 (Leaf trichome density: 135/sq cm), ICB 264 (gossypol gland: 126/sq cm), ICB 1 (epicuticular wax content: 29.63 µg/sq.cm) CCB 26 and ICB 73 were identified as tolerance to sucking pests. CCB 64(6/sq cm) will less gossypol glands was identified to breed for low gossypol varieties. Quality genotypes: Genotype with highest boll weight is CCB 143 B (5.35 g), Ginning percent ICB 176 (37.5), Fiber length CCB 11A (39.4), fiber strength CCB 28 (44.1) were identified based on fiber studies.
Development of Bt and non Bt ELS hybrids:
- Non Bt: HxB hybrids namely MCU VT5 x CCB 64, MCU VT5 x ICB 1 had significantly higher number of bolls, hybrids CCH 15-1 x CCB 64, Suraj x Suvin, Suraj x ICB 1 and Surabhi x CCB64 (4.13g) had significantly highest single boll, hybrids hybrid CCH 15-1 x ICB 290 had the higher GOT of 36 % GP. MCU VT5 x ICB 1 and Surabhi x CCB64 had a fibre length of 39.9mm and fibre strength of 39.2 g/tex and 40.9 g/tex.
- Bt Hybrids: Hybrids namely Rajat Bt x Suvin, GJHV 374 Bt x ICB 194, PKV 018 Bt x ICB 255, PKV 018 Bt x ICB 199, Rajat Bt x ICB 284, Rajat Bt x ICB 255, PKV 018 Bt x suvin were identified for higher number of bolls per plants
