  • One-hectare Integrated farming system (IFS) model was developed. Pigeon pea was intercropped in cotton with 6:2 ratio in one acre area and in another one acre area, soybean was grown in kharif, followed by chickpea + mustard in rabi. A goat (Usmanabadi) unit gave a net return of ₹15,812 with the generation of 120 man days. A poultry (Giriraja) unit (100 birds in two batches) gave a net profit of ₹65,614. Fruit and vegetables (Custard apple, papaya, French bean, bhindi, tomato, gourd group vegetable, etc.) were taken as a horticulture component in IFS, yielded a net profit of ₹29,134 in a year. Overall, the IFS model produced 70.2 q/ha cotton equivalent yield with 1.95 B:C ratio. Overall, one-hectare IFS could generate 492 man-days during the one-year cropping season.
  • Permanent raised and sunken bed method of cultivation under organic farming was found economically sustainable in effective utilization of resources such as water, nutrients and recycling of crop and weed biomass. Under raised beds, cropping intensity of even 300 % was possible with tomato/carrot/French bean (pre-kharif) – bhindi (kharif) – French bean (post kharif) especially under medium lowland. On sunken beds, rice –rice or rice-legume (lentil) was found profitable. This model is suitable for lowlands with good drainage facilities and wet soil depth of about 0.5 m.
  • Nutrient recycling through vermicomposting and in-situ green manuring, pruning from hedge row species (5 t green biomass/ha) along with FYM application (10 t/ha) fulfilled nutritional requirement of crops in organic farming system model and sustained the overall productivity. Rock phosphate was used for supplementation of P requirement of the crops. Neem cake/oil, Karanjin, Panchagavya etc. were used for pest and disease management.
  • To promote resource conservation, crop diversification and carbon sequestration in slopping land (30-40% slope) under changing climate, a land use model (0.53 ha) involving natural forest, fodder crops, leguminous cover crops, intercropping of maize + legume, residue management, conservation tillage, micro rain water harvesting structure (5 m x 4 m x 1.5 m) etc. was developed for climate resilient agriculture in hills.
  • Five integrated rain water management technologies viz., conservation agriculture (CA) in rice and maize based cropping systems, roof water harvesting for diversified use, multiple use of pond water for enhancing water productivity, raised and sunken bed technology for crop diversification and system of rice intensification for higher productivity were demonstrated in a participatory mode in 70 farmers field covering 30 villages across Ri-Bhoi District, Meghalaya during 2010-12.
  • Rice-lentil cropping system was evaluated in both upland and lowland conditions under different tillage and residue management options. Rice grown under minimum tillage for rice and zero tillage for lentil system recorded significantly higher yield (3.41 t/ha) in comparison to conventional tillage for both rice and lentil system (2.46 t/ha). There was 65% and 30.2% enhancement in grain yield of lentil in upland due to mulching and 40 cm standing stubble compared to residue removal, respectively. The highest soil moisture content was observed under mulching followed by 40 cm and 20 cm standing stubbles.
