- Developed Insecticide compatible bioinsecticide formulations for whitefly control in cotton: Three oil based bioinsecticide formulations were developed using insecticide compatible and most virulent strains of Metarhizium anisopliae, Cordyceps javanica, Beauveria bassiana (2018-2020) ICAR-CICR Annual Report-2016-17, p.68-69. (2017-19). Developed three entomopathogenic bioformulations for whitefly management: Bioformulations Isaria javanica (Ij)-102, Metarhizium anisopliae (Ma) 1299, and Beauveria bassiana (Bb)-4511. Bb-4511, Ij-102, Pyriproxifen and Ma-1299 were most effective for whitefly nymphal mortality of 83. 6, 81.7, 76.8 and 76.1% at 7 DAI, respectively.
- Developed bio and IPM modules: Biological module A (2 sprays each of neem and Isaria javanica -102), Bio module B (2 sprays each of neem and Metarhizium anisopliae-1299) and IPM module A ((2 sprays of neem, 1 spray each of Flonicamid @ 1 ml/L and Ij-102)) showed higher nymphal mortality than existing IPM module 2018-20.
- Developed a new polyhouse bioassay method for EPF screening against whitefly: New method is the most suitable for evaluating large-scale EPFs and is less time and labour consuming for egg-laying and recording the nymphal observations than IRAC method. By this method, both EPFs and chemicals can be evaluated against whitefly nymphs. Sain et al., 2019 Egyptian Journal of Biological Pest Control. 29: 31, 1-11; ICAR-CICR Annual Report-2017-18, pp.65-66 (2018-19).
- Identified insecticide compatible and most virulent entomopathogenic fungi for whitefly management: EPFs namely Ij-102, Ma-1299, Ij- 99, Fm 83 and Bb 4565 were found the most compatible with full and/ or half dose of IPM components viz. neem, pongamia, castor oil, spiromesifen, flonicamid, diafenthiuron, buprofegin, pyriproxyfen, imidacloprid, trizophos, fipronil, profenophos (2017-18). Sain et al. 2019. Journal of Pesticide Science. 44 (2) 97-105. (2018-19).
- Whitefly management strategy developed and popularized in Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan (2016-2019) Impact: Success story (2016-2018)
- Identified the factors responsible for sudden wilt in north cotton-growing areas: Prominent factors responsible for sudden wilt problems during September were identified as: – no deep ploughing, cotton-wheat-cotton cropping system, early irrigation (before 30 DAS) since past 5 years or more. The soil EC and pH in these fields ranged between 2.5 to 4.5 dS/m and 7.6 to 7.9, respectively (2017-19).
- Biodiversity and conservation of EPFs: Isolated 108 new entomopathogenic fungi (EPFs) isolates from Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan. 40 cultures deposited to the Indian Type Culture Collection (ITCC) center for identification and accession numbers, and 20 EPFs are submitted to NCBI. Procured 265 cultures from Microbial Type Culture Collection (MTCC), National Agriculturally Important Microbial Culture Collection (NAIMCC) maintained for their bioefficacy evaluation (2016-18)
- Management of root rot in G. arboretum and G. hirsutum cotton: Field experiments conducted during 2017-18 and 2018-19 at CICR RS Sirsa for comparative evaluation of 12 biological and chemicals as a seed treatment on two cultivars namely CICR-2 (GSM based G. abrobeum hybrid) and CSH-3129 (G. hirsutum variety). The pooled data revealed that the combined seed treatment with T.harzianum Th-11 (10g/kg), P. fluorescens Pf-2 (10g/kg) and Mycorrhiza (20g/kg) gave the highest root rot reduction over control in both the cultivars (57.5 and 51%) up to 60 days after sowing. Farmer’s field demonstrations 25 each during 2017 and 2018 were organized in Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab. (2017-19).
- ICM technology for Bt varieties:100 FLDs under NFSM in Haryana and Rajasthan (2016-2017): Farmers got 12.5% more seed cotton yield than normal. The BC ratio was 2.24, 2.19 in Haryana & Rajasthan, respectively compared to 1.79: R. Kumar, SK Sain and D Monga 2019. Success Story: Management of Whitefly- Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) and Cotton Leaf Curl Disease (CLCuD) in North Cotton Growing Zone of India-(2016-18). ICAR-CICR Regional Station Technical Bulleting No.2/2019

The packages were evaluated and validated in 156 net house trails in Punjab during 2008-2010.
- Liquid fertilizer application technology: A collaborative effort of AVRDC-RCSA & PAU, BAU & ICAR-RC: Technology utilizing Liquid fertilizer application at five stages @ 240:240:240 mg for tomato, eggplant and capsicum developed and validated in Punjab & Jharkhand. The technology reduces 38% fertilizer consumption and increases yield by 40%. 50 net-house vegetable growers are utilizing the technology in Punjab and 15 farmers in Jharkhand(2008-11).

Finalized year-round vegetable production home-garden models able to produce 260-350 kg/ 36 m2 area are established in Punjab and Jharkhand. Models were promoted in 350 and 1500 households in Punjab and Jharkhand, respectively during 2008-2010. Chadha, M.L., Yang, R., Sain, S.K., Triveni, C., Pal, R., Ravishankar, M. and Ghai, T.R. 2012. Home gardens: an intervention for improved health and nutrition in selected states of India. Acta Horticulturae. 937: 1049-1055 (ISHS). (2007-11). The introduction of such gardens into the tribal community in Jharkhand State in India, which are specifically designed by AVRDC to include nutrient-dense and well-adapted species for the benefit of all family members, have proved to be of considerable nutritional and economic value. These gardens have tripled per capita vegetable consumption from 0.3–0.5 to 0.9–1.5 kg per week21 , halved weekly expenditure on other vegetables, and introduced new vegetables to participants’ diets (Keatinge et al 2012).
- On-farm production of Biocontrol agents: Developed simple, low-cost on-farm production technologies for mass production of biocontrol agents and microbial biopesticides. The laboratory & training center was established at NIPHM in 2013. Trained 402 state & SAUs officials in 17 trainings (ten or more days) and 788 farmers in three days training programmes. The success of the technology and efforts could be observed in the states like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka where the use of T. harzianum was demonstrated in 1680 ha of farmer’s fields during 2013-14 to 2015-16 through Tobacco Board. The farmers were able to get more crop yield (125 to 375 kg/ha increase) by reducing the disease problems viz. damping-off, basal root rots, black shank, frog-eye leaf spot etc. even after minimizing 3-4 chemicals pesticide sprays in tobacco crop. In Kerala, 300 farmers have started production and use of Trichoderma sp. (> 1010 c.f.u./gm) in about Rs. 10-15/- per kg. Farmers using bio-intensive strategies have reportedly earned more profit. The technology is also being promoted in the Meghalaya state under RKVY project and in 150 villages covering 56 Blocks in 16 districts of Tamil Nadu. (2013-15) (Sain, and Sathyanarayana 2016.).
- Application of biopesticides in tobacco cultivation: A collaborative work of NIPHM & Tobacco Board: Implementation of extension and development schemes “biointensive pest management strategies among tobacco Growers in Andhra Pradesh & Karnataka” by Tobacco Board through NIPHM (Produced & supplied (6000 kg each of Trichoderma & Pseudomonas formulation) & demonstrated in 920 ha area of tobacco cultivation.
